Keys are pickups that are primarily used to open various kinds of locks, such as locked doors, chests and Key Blocks.

Fiend Folio adds a new variant known as Spicy Keys, which hurt Isaac upon being picked up but yield more keys. There are 5 different variants of Spicy Keys.

Keys

Name	Appearance	Description
Spicy Key		+2 keys on pickup, but hurts Isaac for half a heart (full heart when in Chapter 4 or beyond). Replaces Keys when holding Chili Powder.
Super Spicy Key		+3 keys on pickup, but hurts Isaac for half a heart (full heart when in Chapter 4 or beyond). Always deals a full heart of damage if spawned from Chili Powder that is golden or while holding Mom's Box. Replaces Key Rings when holding Chili Powder. Instead replaces Keys if holding Chili Powder that is golden or with Mom's Box.
Quadruple Spicy Key		+4 keys on pickup, but hurts Isaac for a full heart. Replaces Key Rings if holding Chili Powder that is golden or with Mom's Box.
Charged Spicy Key		+2 keys and recharges Isaac's active item on pickup, but hurts Isaac for half a heart (full heart when in Chapter 4 or beyond). Replaces Charged Keys when holding Chili Powder.
Super Charged Spicy Key		+3 keys and recharges Isaac's active item on pickup, but hurts Isaac for a full heart. Replaces Charged Keys if holding Chili Powder that is golden or with Mom's Box.

Notes

• Because the damage from Spicy Keys is considered fire damage, if Isaac has Hot Bombs or Pyromaniac this damage is negated.

Trivia

• Spicy Keys are a reference to an illustration posted by Will Laren on Tumblr and Flickr, where a man gives his brother "the spicy keychain" by making him pick up very hot keys he had heated up in the oven.
  • This is also referenced in a unique floor transition dream sequence added in Fiend Folio.
